Public urged to stick to lockdown rules over bank holiday weekend as temperatures set to soar above 20C

The bank holiday weekend is now upon us, and although temperatures are set to rise above 20C for many parts of the UK on Friday (8 May) and Saturday (9 May), Brits are being urged not to break lockdown rules. ‘Follow the guidance’ During the daily Downing Street briefing on Thursday (7 May), Dominic Raab told the public to "follow the guidance". He added that there would be no change to social distancing rules until Boris Johnson’s “roadmap” out of lockdown address to the nation, which will take place on Sunday evening (10 May). Mr Raab said: "Any changes in the short term will be modest, small, incremental and very carefully monitored. "For the moment it is really important, particularly as people look towards a warm bank holiday weekend, that we continue to follow the guidance in place at this time." The Met Police's Chief Superintendent Karen Findlay, said: “I know it’s a bank holiday weekend, and the weather is due to be good but I would ask that you continue to follow the restrictions, this is about keeping you safe.” “The vast majority of people are, and I thank them for their continued support and co-operation at this challenging time, in order to prevent the spread of the virus and extra burden on our NHS colleagues.” What is the ‘roadmap’ out of lockdown? Leading his first Downing Street briefing since recovering from Covid-19, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Thursday (30 April): “What you are going to get next week is really a road map, a menu of options. “The dates and times of each individual measure will be very much driven by where we are in the epidemic, what the data is really saying, and we are getting in a lot more data every day now and in the course of the next few days.” Alongside this, a draft plan of the government’s workplace rules post-lockdown was revealed to business groups and unions, with reduced hot-desking, working from home and shift staggering among the measures that could be introduced. However, Scotland First Minister Sturgeon has said it was "highly unlikely" any significant changes in regards to lifting lockdown restrictions would be made at this time. The First Minister had previously said that the lifting of coronavirus lockdown measures would likely be phased, but that measures could be in place into 2021. The Scottish Government also issued an updated document, which detailed their strategy for “transitioning out of the current lockdown arrangements”.
